Caring For Your Artwork
Avoid Heat
Your framed pictures should not be hung above radiators as the heat can cause the paper and wood to dry out and the adhesives to fail.
Avoid Damp
Dampness may cause your pictures to ripple and if they become stuck to the glass may be hard to remove without damage. Brown stains may occur due to fungal growth. You should always allow at least 6 months before hanging a picture on newly plastered walls.
Eye-Level Display
Most pictures are designed to be viewed at eye level so try and keep the tops of the frames aligned whatever the size picture. It is recommended that there is some sort of symmetrical design considered when hanging groups of pictures.
Hang Securely
It is recommended that pictures are hung by two hooks each set about quarter of the way in from each side of the picture. Ensure that your hooks can carry the weight of the picture and that the fixtures to the picture are strong enough to support the weight.
Cleaning
Do not use cleaning fluids on pictures but clean with a soft brush. If using a glass cleaner or similar apply to cloth first and keep away from frame as it may affect the finish.
Check Pictures Regularly
If signs of brown spotting, discolouration or small insects you may need to return to the framer for re-framing. Ensure brown paper tape is still sticking to the back of the picture and that any metal parts are not corroding. Check cord is not deteriorating.
Out of the Light
Ensure pictures are not hung in bright sunlight as the colours will fade and papers will discolour. UV coated glass can be used to slow down deterioration but this glass is more expensive.
Handling
Always carry pictures holding both sides of the frame firmly. When storing put glass to glass to prevent hangers damaging the frames. Store vertically.
